The Jazz Lab Story
The Jazz Lab Story
The next generation of Cincinnati’s club scene for those who love jazz and are passionate about its forward momentum. Unlike anything in our region, Jazz Lab will serve as musical home to a multicultural, multigenerational community of music lovers who want to hear what’s next. The community’s passion for this most American art form extends well beyond simple enjoyment of the genre; Jazz Labers share a commitment to supporting the next generation of musicians by giving them a reliable audience, a hip venue and a source of financial support.
Jazz is progressive and evolutionary, by definition. Experimentation, risk and genre-bending are not merely aspects of jazz but are, in fact, its very foundation. Jazz Lab is music by the next generation, for the next generation. And they’re hungry for it. Enthusiasm for jazz among the younger set is palpable, but they have little appetite for a restricted diet of Coletrain and the traditional club. Jazz Lab will be a hip, progressive home to a community of music lovers who cherish the past but are all fired up about the future.
Jazz Lab will be hosted at the new Liberty Exhibition Hall in Northside. Originally a turn of the century vaudeville and silent movie house, this historic Cincinnati treasure is coming back to it full glory as home to some of our region’s most creative theatrical, dance, improv and musical companies. Starting in 2018, Jazz Lab will launch with once monthly weekend events. Performance offerings and frequency will be reassessed mid-2018 based on learnings from the first two quarters. One of Cincinnati’s top new jazz musicians is responsible for curation and scheduling of new and emerging local and national talent. These will be ticketed events, with proceeds supporting the musicians themselves and the further renovation of the Liberty Exhibition Hall. With modest sponsorship, Jazz Lab is positioned to establish a viable nonprofit business model that contributes to the vibrancy of Greater Cincinnati and our local music scene.
